Ein Deutsches Requiem

Sunday 3 November, 17:00 - 18:15
Sankt Johannes Church, Malmö
Julkonsert - Ein Deutsches Requiem

All Saints' weekend is the time of year when we commemorate and remember those who have left us. The occasion has inspired many composers, including Johannes Brahms.

However, Brahms deviated from the traditional form of the requiem when he wrote his mass for the dead, choosing to focus on those who mourn rather than those who have passed away.

Blessed are they that mourn; for they shall be comforted. They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.

Brahms replaced the traditional Latin with a German text and centred on comfort and hope, bringing the music closer to the people. On the front of the score, he wrote: ‘A human requiem’.
