Black mothers' memory activism in the context of the global (colonial) construction of injustice
Join us for a screening of the film Desova and a lecture and discussion with professor Tereza Ventura from Universidade do Estado in Rio de Janeiro.
The presentation brings about the memory and testimonies of the struggle that emerged in Rio de Janeiro in the global context of transitional justice and democratic government. Situated in the particular case of black mothers struggles for justice against the police killing and the enforced disappearance of their children.
The lecture will address how memory activism has been able to open a public critique of legal power, linking active and covert co-operation between state actors and legal actors. Brazil has been condemned by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. In response, mothers' movements have called for active participation in the creation of an action plan for political accountability.
