Finding a fit – Social orientations and divisions in young people’s transition to youth education

Laura Gilliam will talk about her ongoing project, Diverging Paths. Educational Choices and Social Divisions, which focuses on educational choices and social divisions. The project consists of four complementary ethnographic studies that examine how children, young people and parents from different social and ethnic backgrounds make their choices of school, upper secondary education and further education.

The seminar is part of the Sociology@MaU seminar series.

About the lecturer

Laura Gilliam is an educational anthropologist at Aarhus University researching children, schools and ethnicity. In particular, she focuses on the relationship between children and young people's self-perceptions, communities, practices and experiences on the one hand, and the institutional logic and practice of schooling on the other, and how this relates to the cultural norms, conflicts and ‘civilising’ projects of society. She has conducted ethnographic fieldwork in several schools in Denmark, and also among children in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa.

About Sociology@MaU

Sociology@MaU is a seminar series that highlights sociological perspectives in research at, and beyond, Malmö University.

Sociology@MaU brings together researchers and practitioners to discuss contemporary issues and spark interdisciplinary dialogue incorporating sociological perspectives. The aim is to encourage intellectual exchange about theories, methods and empirical fields, thus providing fertile ground for ideas about new – more just – ways of organising society.

The seminars are open to all.
