About the project

Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) is characterised by burning and painful sensations in the oral cavity and negatively affects individuals’ quality of life both physically and psychosocially. Common symptoms include pain, difficulties in oral functions, taste disturbances, xerostomia, as well as anxiety.

There is limited scientific knowledge regarding the underlying pain mechanisms and patients’ understanding and management of their pain, which is crucial for selecting appropriate management strategies for BMS. In this context, digitalisation in society, including healthcare, has been highlighted as a pathway toward more efficient, equitable, and sustainable patient care. Accordingly, this project is addressing current knowledge gaps concerning pain mechanisms in BMS and the role of digitalisation, to develop an evidence-based digital platform for information, education, and treatment for individuals with BMS.
