About the project

Mucosal tissues, the protective barriers that cover the surface of our organs, are of great interest for medical applications. For instance, oral transmucosal administration is a non-invasive, cost-effective, and patient-friendly route where the drug could reach a fast therapeutic effect, an important aspect in the treatment of several conditions.

To design new therapeutic opportunities and fill the knowledge gap in mucosal studies, both basic and applied research are required to

  1. deeply understand the tissue architecture and the biochemical composition,
  2. create a “toolbox” of robust mucosal models and
  3. design and assess novel transmucosal formulations.

Finally, the aim will be to design and assess novel pharmaceutical formulations to fulfill unmet clinical needs. The project resides in an interdisciplinary environment, involving Biofilms – Research Center for Biointerfaces at Malmö University, within the Biobarriers – Health, disorders and Healing project, with synergistic connections with related industry partners and regional health care providers.
