About the project

The digitalisation of schools and the new demands for media literacy, creativity, entrepreneurship, collaboration, and problem-based learning create challenges regarding how learning and teaching are organised and carried out. The didactic challenge for subject teachers lies not only in possessing knowledge and understanding of the significance of media but also in designing lesson plans that provide space for students to create and critically engage with media texts and their content. However, these challenges also offer opportunities to develop teaching practices in which students explore and investigate phenomena and issues from the world outside the classroom.

The need to strengthen and develop competence in moving images within schools is significant at several levels of our educational systems. From a Media and Information Literacy (MIL) perspective, it is a concern relevant to most subject areas in education. The documentary film genre is a highly useful form for investigation and presentation of knowledge, intersecting with many goals and core contents in the upper secondary school curriculum.

A pilot project

This project serves as a pilot for collaboration between the Teacher Education program and upper secondary schools, within the framework of professional development for teachers. In this project, teachers, student teachers, and researchers work together to design, study, and carry out interdisciplinary teaching modules where moving images and the documentary genre are used as tools for knowledge creation and the presentation of results.
