About the project

Clinical education is a central part of specialist nursing students' education. One area of competence for specialist nurses in surgery and anaesthesia is to precept specialist nursing students in a perioperative context (encompassing care for the patient before, during, and after surgery), where there can be factors that both promote and hinder precepting. Special demands are placed on these preceptors due to the complexity of the context, such as the requirement for high production while maintaining patient safety and quality of care. Another challenge is the shortage of specialist nurses; Operating Room Nurses and Nurse Anesthetists in Sweden can result in a lack of preceptor competence in these professions. Good quality in clinical education is a central factor in students' development and goal achievement, where preceptors play an important role. Therefore, organizations need to create adequate prerequisites for precepting.

A knowledge gap

Today, there is a knowledge gap and limited research on the prerequisites for Operating Room Nurses and Nurse Anesthetists who precept specialist nursing students in a perioperative context. Thus, this topic is intended to be investigated from different perspectives in a Swedish context in the present project.

Four sub-studies

The project comprises four sub-studies, where the first sub-study will be an observational study to describe precepting in the perioperative context. Sub-study two will be a survey study to show how prepared preceptors are to precept, followed by a deepening and further development in sub-study three through individual interviews with preceptors. In sub-study four, focus group interviews will highlight managers' perspectives on precepting. Results from the project can form the basis for the development of precepting in a perioperative context.
