About the project
Background
Despite access to free dental care, children and adolescents of low socioeconomic status (SES) in Sweden, suffer from worse oral health and a higher risk of caries. Some individuals of low SES can maintain good health by having health resources, capacity, and assets to develop, improve and maintain health, so-called resilience.
Aim
To identify resilience factors among caries-free young adults in Sweden.
Material and methods
This case-control study uses register data and data collected from questionnaires. Individuals born in 2002 of persistently low income will comprise the healthy case group (caries-free) and unhealthy control group. Register data is collected from the quality register Swedish Quality Registry for Caries and Periodontal Disease (SKaPa) and Statistics Sweden (SCB). The questionnaire is based on the results of a qualitative interview study among healthy young adults from a low socioeconomic background (Nordström et al. unpublished) and explores potential health resilience factors by statements reflecting psychosocial and family factors.
