The unfinished with Malmö Academic Orchestra

When Franz Schubert’s “Unfinished Symphony” is mentioned, it is usually in reference to his Eighth Symphony, known as “unfinished” simply because he never completed it. Of the traditional four movements that usually make up a symphony, Schubert only finished the first two. He then went on to write a Ninth Symphony and even began a Tenth Symphony. Unfortunately, Schubert passed away before completing the Tenth, leaving us two incomplete works.

Approximately 150 years after Schubert’s death, the sketches for his Tenth Symphony were revisited by Luciano Berio in his piece Rendering. In it, Berio intertwines fragments from Schubert’s notes with his own almost cinematic compositions. The piece unites the two composers musically, merging their compositional styles shaped by their respective musical contexts and complementing each other in a new musical world.
