Since September 2021, El Häkkinen has been a doctoral student at the Department of Urban Studies. In their dissertation project, they examine how inequality is organized within work organizations, using an intersectional perspective that includes age, class, gender, race/ethnicity, and sexuality. The study focuses particularly on the municipal organization of Malmö (the City of Malmö), its home care services, and how home care workers (assistant nurses and care assistants) are affected by the inequality. Theoretically, the project is inspired by sociologist and organizational theorist Joan Acker’s concept of “inequality regimes” within organizations. El has previously studied gender studies and human rights at the undergraduate level and holds a Master’s degree in Leadership and Organization.
