Project description

The aim of the project is to explore implications of waiting in the context of family reunification to Sweden. The dissertation intersects the scholarly fields of migration studies and public health, drawing on literature of waiting and temporalities in migration. From a public health perspective, waiting will be understood as a social determinant of health. Using a mixed method, temporal aspects of waiting and its mental health implications will be explored through the analysis of survey data, focus group interviews and individual/family interviews.

Results from the quantitative and the qualitative modules will be converged using an intersectional lens. This lens is particularly important in light of the current changes in Swedish policy, in which certain income groups have a higher likelihood of obtaining reunification than others. The project aims to contribute to the theoretical literature on waiting by adding a collective, transnational and intersectional understanding of the phenomenon. It also contributes with previously unexplored quantitative data on waiting times for family reunification and its connection to health outcomes.
