Project description
‘Children's Housing First’ is a model initially developed within the framework of a Vinnova project 2019-2020 in collaboration between Malmö University, Skåne City Mission, Save the Children and AFRY. The model has since been further developed by Save the Children and Skåne City Mission, which started up operations on a small scale in Malmö and Helsingborg.
The starting point for the project is that we are increasingly seeing that people with no other problems than weak finances are affected by homelessness, so-called structural homelessness. This is particularly serious from a child's perspective, as the lack of a permanent home limits children's opportunities for a full life and can reduce the opportunities for good health and work in adulthood.
The aim and purpose of Children's Housing First is to ensure that more families with children living in structural homelessness in Sweden have a stable and long-term housing situation and a sustainable livelihood. A family covered by the programme is given a first-hand contract for a home. Parents are supported, if necessary, in achieving long-term self-sufficiency. The housing is combined with individual flexible support from a counsellor, based on the needs of each family, with the child at the centre. The counsellor also acts as a bridge between landlord and tenant. During 2023 and 2024, Martin Grander at Malmö University will conduct follow-up research on the programme. The follow-up research is funded by the County Administrative Board of Skåne Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
