Migration, Integration, Asylum Policy and International Politics
New study sheds light on childhoods shaped by the fear of deportation
New study sheds light on childhoods shaped by the fear of deportation
In a new article, Jacob Lind highlights the long‑term consequences of prolonged housing insecurity for young adults who grew up in families facing deportation in Denmark and Sweden. Drawing on interviews with 23 individuals, the research shows how unstable living conditions, whether in Danish deportation centres or as undocumented residents in Sweden, have shaped their sense of home, relationships, and wellbeing. The study offers a long‑term perspective on how migration policy can influence young people’s future prospects.
Gender and Equality as Instruments of Governance
Gender and Equality as Instruments of Governance
In 2022, Sweden tightened its guidelines for receiving refugees, placing particular emphasis on women and girls. In her study, Brigitte Suter examines parliamentary motions from 2015–2022 to understand how gender, mobility, religion and vulnerability shape notions of who is deemed deserving of protection. The analysis shows that gender functions as a political steering tool within migration policy. It marks a shift from strictly rights‑based principles towards a more humanitarian, yet simultaneously more controlling, policy approach.
