A cancer diagnose, such as colorectal cancer, has a profound impact on the surrounding family members health and well-being. As a result, supporting family members at times of illness is underscored by both the International Council of Nurses’s definition of nursing and in standards of care for oncology nurses. However, although the idea of the importance of support to family members is well integrated in the cancer care, family centered standards of care appear to have difficulties in reaching out to clinical practice.

Consequently, a need for focus and development of support to family members of persons diagnosed with colorectal cancer has been emphasized. Hence, the overall aim of the present thesis is to develop a support model for family members of persons diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

The thesis consist of four separate studies, guided by the Medical Research Council framework for development of complex interventions.
